Christa Short Terry's House

When: Thursday, Jun 8, 2017, 12:15PM - 1:30PM

5080 North Blackstone Avenue, Fresno, CA 93711

When a critically ill or injured patient arrives at Community Regional Medical Center, family is usually close behind. Terry’s House, located directly across the street from Community Regional in downtown Fresno, is a home-away-from-home for families of critically ill patients. Built in 2011 and funded solely on donations, Terry’s House is a place where families can eat, sleep and recharge while waiting to bring their loved one home.

Why is Terry’s House so important? Many patients come from outside of the Central Valley and their families must be away from home for extended periods of time, making it difficult for some to pay to stay in a hotel. Terry’s House provides a compassionate and supportive environment to make it possible for families to stay close to their loved one in their time of need.

Christa Short

Christa Short serves as the Director of Terry’s House, a home-away-from-home for out of town families with critically ill and injured loved ones being cared for at Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno. As Director, she is responsible for the overall operations of the facility and is also responsible for guest services, hospital relations, internal and external communication efforts, on-going fundraising initiatives, community outreach, as well as, volunteer recruitment and engagement.

While attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, Short was a critical care patient following a devastating car accident that took place in southern California. After a terrifying phone call, her mother and father traveled on a moment’s notice to be by her side. They stayed to support her every step of the way throughout her far from home hospital stay. Years later, after making a full recovery, moving home and completing her undergraduate education, the opportunity to help build Terry’s House was presented to Christa … because of her personal experience and passion to help people, it resonated with her immediately. She jumped in full force during the early years of the capital campaign as part of the Community Medical Foundation team and Short later transitioned into her current role once the $5 million homelike facility was constructed and opened in early 2011. She’s been working tirelessly since, to ensure that over 6,000 families to date have had the most comforting support possible during their uncertain and stressful time in Fresno while staying at Terry’s House.

In her past endeavors, Short worked as the Director of Marketing and Communication for OK Produce. She also worked on the fundraising team for Ashley Swearengin’s successful mayoral campaign in 2008. Christa loves to foster new relationships and programs in the areas she works.

Short is a Hoover High School Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude graduate from Fresno Pacific University. She was one of the youngest people to participate in and graduate from the Leadership Fresno program. During her time in the program, as a member of Class 27, Short held the position of class president and she is now currently serving as a past Chair and Healthcare Day Coordinator of the Leadership Fresno Steering Committee. Short is also a member of the note card ministry team at The Well Community Church, a new member of PEO International and a longtime member of local non-profit, PINC Fresno (Philanthropy Inspired By the Needs of our Community).

At the age of 25, Christa was recognized as a “40 Under 40” Honoree and has also been recognized by the Marjaree Mason Center as a Top 10 Professional Woman of the Year.
